Wind Turbine Lab

The wind turbine was put on-line and made operational at the Parkview Engineering campus on July 31, 2007. The wind turbine was installed during June and July 2007, and is now delivering clean-green electricity to the Parkview Campus. August 1, 2007 was its first full day of operation. Bauer Power was the general contractor/installer for the project and John Patten was the faculty member responsible for the overall project. Others involved and assisted on the project were Andrew Richards, a student, and physical plant/maintenance andrenovation services staff, including Conn Macomber, Dan Brimmer, Dale Sheppard and Pete Strazdas. The turbine was purchased and installed by Dr. Patten with funding from his IDC (PI) account. Dean Tim Greene (CEAS) also provided some financial support for the interconnection of the turbine to the university grid (electrical connection) and additional funding for the dedication ceremony and plaque.

The wind turbine is a Skystream 3.7 from Southwest Wind, and is rated at 1.8 kW nominal, and 2 kW maximum. The unit comes equipped with a remote interface that provides for remote display and operation of the turbine from inside the Parkview campus building complex. To the right is a panel showing a webcam trained on the tower, and listings of the current Lag, Power output and RPM of the turbine. Historical data is available to the left under the Turbine Data heading. We are actively developing applets and displays of wind turbine data similar to those at other wind turbine sites, such as Fatspaniel.

The wind turbine is expected to generate about 5,000 kWh/year and has a life expectancy of 20 to 30 years. A dedication ceremony for the wind turbine demonstration project took place on Friday September 14, 2007 at the wind turbine site.
